Comparing with the once popular IDE/ATA interface in the market, the new SATA interface is gradually replacing IDE as the mainstream interface due to higher transfer speed and space consideration. The system board manufactures change to SATA interface based on the consideration of improving performance, reliability, saving space, and reducing the cost. However, we find the transformation process is not going well for two reasons. First, current system boards are mostly with IDE interface, and such designs not only use up much more space than SATA interface would, but also would cause the mechanical interference problems. Even the space occupied by SATA solution will save up to 70% with reducing the interface width from 58mm to 17mm, it will take time for the industry to adopt to SATA interface. Second, the current SATA solution requires for additional power cable which may not work well in some mobile or intense shocks and high vibration environment.
